  • Meet top 5 First Ladies That Makes The Song Sing In Nigerian
  • What’s a kingdom without a queen? What’s a record label without its first lady? In urban music, having a lady in a music crew, group or label was necessary in the 80’s 90’s and 00’s. Ruff Ryders had Eve, Murda Inc had Ashanti, Junior Mafia had Lil Kim and in today’s scene the powerful music conglomerate YMCMB have Nicki Minaj.
Having a lone female in a record label helps to reach out to the very important female fan base and helps diversify content. In Nigeria we have a few queens of our own. Here’s taking a look at the Top 5 first ladies of Nigerian pop music.

    Tiwa Savage

She is the first lady of Mavin Records. She joined the Mavin label when it transformed from Mo’ Hits. Her association with Don Jazzy’s record label was met with great applause. Tiwa has however struggled to get her pre-Mavin form back. When she was associated to Cecil Hammond’s FlyTime she released two hit singles in quick succession ‘Kele Kele Love’ and ‘Love Me 3x’. Even ‘Without My Heart’ featuring Don Jazzy was seen as a song with potential.
Since her move to Mavin, Tiwa Savage hasn’t produced a hit single. Her Mavin single ‘Folarin failed to yield the same results as her previous singles. She has however released a video for ‘Without My Heart. She has even snagged an endorsement deal with Pepsi. Even without a hit single now Tiwa is perhaps the biggest first lady in the game right now. Expect her to have a few tricks up her sleeves.

    Emma Nyra –

She is the first lady of the newly formed Made Men Music Group (MMMG) home to pop sensation Iyanya. Emma Nyra like many Nigerian pop stars ditched the US and decided to pursue her music interests back home. She made the move at the right time as Iyanya was becoming the hottest commodity on the streets thanks to his runaway single ‘Kukere’.
We first caught a glimpse of her on Iyanya’s super sexual single ‘Ur Waist which featured her seductive vocals. With Iyanya definitely on the rise Triple MG wasted no time in focusing attention on Emma Nyra.
She has released two singles ‘Everything I Do’ featuring Iyanya and ‘Ori Mi Wu’. They haven’t been knockout hits but they’ve at least kept her in the thick of things. She is currently on tour with Iyanya in North America. As Triple MG’s profile continues to rise, Emma Nyra’s profile will rise as well.

    Niyola

Niyola is the first lady of EME-home to Banky W and Wizkid. She was drafted to the roster in 2012. Not a newbie in the game (she released a debut album in 2007) Niyola easily and quietly slotted into EME’s scheme of things.
She had brief but impressive appearances on EME’s compilation album. Out of the compilation album she released her first single under the label ‘Don’t Delay Me’. She hasn’t dropped any single since but it’s most likely that we will be hearing something new from her pretty soon.
With a label packed with acts such as Banky W, Wizkid and Skales who hasn’t yet dropped his debut album she will have to be patient and wait her turn.

    Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade is the first lady of Effyzzie Music Group. At the time she joined the label she was the second act on board. Upcoming rapper Maytronomy was then signed to the label after the exit of pop act DIPP. Before signing to Effyzzie she was with Bayo Omisore’s Jus’ Kiddin’ outfit.
Yemi Alade quickly got to work by releasing ‘Ghen Ghen Love’. A few months after its release Maytronomy and Effyzzie parted ways. Yemi Alade now became the sole act on the label. She has represented Effyzzie well with her sexy video ‘Ghen Ghen Love’.
Working on a mixtape called Aristo Music she has been dropping tracks constantly to keep her name out there. Her next single ‘Faaji’ will soon be released. Many industry heads have tagged her as one of the new acts to watch out for. So far their predictions haven’t been wrong as she has singled-handedly kept the Effyzzie name buzzing. She’s a one man army.

    Sasha P

She is the first lady of Storm Records and the original first lady. She has been with the Obi Asika-led label since 2004. She released her debut album First Lady two years later. The album churned the hit single ‘Adara’.
Sasha hasn’t released any album since then only singles, the most recent ones being ‘Authentic’ and ‘Rain Groove’. It has been a case of musical chairs at Storm with many acts signing or leaving the label. Sasha and Naeto C are the acts who have stayed the longest years at Storm.
These days Sasha is more focused on fashion. She recently established her clothing line ‘Eclectic’ by Sasha. She hasn’t given word on when we should be expecting her sophomore album.
