Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, on Friday
urged Nigerians to defend their votes at every
election, in order to prevent the manipulation of
the process by unscrupulous persons.
Amaechi, who is also the factional chairman of the
Nigeria Governors' Forum, made the declaration
after paying a condolence visit to the leader of
the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola
Tinubu, on the death of his mother, Alhaja
Abibatu Mogaji, in Lagos.
Amaechi said Nigerians should drop the idea of
leaving voting centres after an election, noting
that it was no longer enough for them to entrust
the safety of their ballots to security agents.
"Things should be done in such a way that the
electorate defend their votes, not just leaving
them in the custody of the police alone or leaving
the place after voting," he said.
He noted that if Nigerians guard their votes, it
would be difficult for anyone to manipulate the
result.
The governor said Mogaji was a mother, who gave
her best for the good of Nigerians. He urged
members of her family to emulate her virtues.
Also on Friday, businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim,
described the late market leader's death as a
shocking development.
He said she fought the cause of Nigerian masses
and was an astute manager of human resources.
"She left a bold and permanent print in the sands
of time and her lifetime was a glorious and
memorable one," he said.
Honorary Consul of Switzerland, Chief Marlies
Allen, in a message urged Tinubu to take heart.
Daughter of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr.
Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, showered praises on
Mogaji for her services to humanity and prayed
for the repose of her soul.
