MAKURDI - Elder Statesman and former
Minister of Steel, Wantaregh Paul Unongo has
declared that the Northern Elders Forum, NEF
would support a northern presidential
candidate at the 2015 general election.
Unongo who is the deputy leader and
spokesman of the forum made the declaration
at the weekend while interacting with
Journalists at his Makurdi residence.
He lamented that the North has not been
fairly treated under the present
administration, "particularly in structural
allocations" adding that "we would rationalize
on that at the appropriate time".
The former Minister further vowed that
whoever or whichever presidential candidate
the NEF throws its weight behind at the polls
would win the election given the numerical
strength of the north.
While expressing worry over the crisis
rocking the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF,
Unongo said he felt insulted by the conduct
of the Governors because they are "Chief
Executives who are supposed to drive,
institutionalize and solidify the democratic
process.
"Our heads of government ruling Nigeria have
not been able to do the right thing. These are
jokers. You think this thing will not fall back
on you and your country? What are you
teaching your children?" Unongo lamented.
The elder statesman who reiterated his
support for the state of emergency declared
in some northern states by President
Jonathan, Unongo maintained that it was the
proper thing for anybody to do in the
circumstance.
On June 12 and the democratic process in
the country, the NEF spokesman said nothing
much had changed from what he described
as "the same military system" adding that
true democracy should have respect for
human dignity.
