An 82-year-old female politician in Ogun State has been murdered, police said.
The octonagerian, Saliat Eleweju, was a close ally of a former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel.
She was an influential woman leader of the Peoples Democratic Party when Mr. Daniel was governor.
Police said she was attacked with machete by an unknown assailant at her home in Sabo area of Ijebu-Ode.
Speaking with journalists on Thursday at Eleweran Police Headquarters in Abeokuta, shortly after the state’s new Commissioner of Police resume duties, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the woman, who was a notable market leader(Iyaloja) also, was attacked by her assailants at about 4.30pm on Wednesday.
There, she was referred to another hospital in Sagamu, before being transferred to hospital in Lagos where she eventually died.
Mr. Adejobi said the corpse had been moved to the morgue as at the time of filing this report, adding that the police commissioner has concluded arrangement to visit the scene of the incident.
He assured that the authorities would apprehend the perpetrators of the crime, adding that investigations have already commenced.
