  • Suspect arrested for fatally shooting uniformed Texas Deputy at gas station
  • A man has been arrested for allegedly shooting a sheriff's deputy while he was at a gas station in northwest Harris County, Texas, at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday night.
Darren Goforth with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas, was shot from behind while pumping gas at the Houston station. He was in uniform at the time. He died from his wounds. "The male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times," Deputy Thomas Gilliland said at a press briefing.

After the officer fell, "the suspect came over and shot the deputy multiple times as he lay on the ground," Gilliland continued.

A Life Flight helicopter was initially dispatched to the scene, but was later called off.

McKenzie Stalter told ABC that she was driving nearby when "we heard shots and when I turned and looked, the lady was screaming over top of him … she was laying on top him. She was saying that was her best friend and that he had two kids."

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman spoke at a news conference on Saturday and said the only motive known for the killing of Goforth, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office, is "absolute madness,".
"We have not found any provocation that we can put our finger on so it's all speculation," Hickman said. "His only target was because he was wearing a uniform."

The sheriff's office released a surveillance photo of the suspect described as a "dark complexioned male" on its Facebook page. Another photo showing what investigators believe to be the suspect's vehicle was posted as well. The automobile is describes as a "red extended cab pick-up styled vehicle."
