ABCON Suspends BDC Operator Who Swallowed $156,000

Following the arrest of six persons including a bureau de change operator by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) last weekend, the Association of Bureau de Change Operators Of Nigeria (ABCON) has suspended the staff and management of Amazon.
This according to ABCON is pending the outcome of the investigations by the association, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the NDLEA. This is coming just a few days after the association instituted its disciplinary committee at a BDC Owners Forum which agreed to suspend any member caught in criminal act pending investigations.
Speaking with journalists at a press conference, the acting President of ABCON, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe said the association was “shocked and embarrassed by the discovery of the involvement of a BDC operator in such an illegal act.”

The NDLEA had last weekend announced the arrest of six persons including a BDC operator, the manager of Amazon BDC Mr Nwokenta Emmanuel at the Excel Oriental Hotel Ikeja for swallowing $156,000 intended for export to Brazil.
Condemning the act, Gwadabe said “ABCON has a zero tolerance for non-compliance with regulatory requirement and for unethical conduct amongst its members.”
Consequently, and in line with the zero tolerance stance of the Association, the Disciplinary and Investigative Committee of ABCON has commenced comprehensive investigations of Amazon BDC and the actions of its directors and staff.”
He added that the executive council of the association had consented to the “indefinite suspension of the Amazon BDC, its directors and staff, pending the outcome of the investigations by the Committee, the NDLEA, EFCC, CBN.
Noting that the suspension of the BDC and its staff and management is not meant to is pre-empt the outcome of the investigations, Gwadabe said it is “to serve as strong warning to all ABCON members that any case of illegality and unethical conduct will be severely dealt with by the association.”
