This woman's twins died so in their memory she carved "ibeji" sculptures
of them. This happened between (1940-1950)...The sculptures are called
"ere ibeji", figures that are carved to house the soul of a deceased
twin. Twins are thought to bring goodluck in the Yoruba culture, if one
of them dies a statuette is made to house the soul of the departed. The
mother cares for it to ensure the welfare of the surviving twin. Upon
maturity the latter takes over the care for life.
