  • AFCON: ‘It was make or break’ – Iheanacho reflects on match-winning penalty vs South Africa
  •

Kelechi Iheanacho has reflected on his decisive penalty that earned the Super Eagles a place in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Leicester City star made his first appearance of the competition and his superb spot kick steered the Super Eagles to a 4-2 victory against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

Iheanacho calmly slotted the ball home despite South Africa goalkeeper, Rowen Williams diving in the right direction.

The forward said it was a moment he cherished as a player

“I felt at that moment, I was carrying the hope of the nation on my shoulder. The penalty was either make or break but I thank God who made it possible for us to go through to the final,” Iheanacho told reporters after the game.

Iheanacho will hope to get more minutes when the Super Eagles face hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the final at the Alassanne Quattara Stadium, Ebimpe on Sunday.
