  • PDP confirms move to bring back Peter Obi
  •

Founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Jerry Gana, has confirmed that the party has made overtures to former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging him to return to the PDP

Gana made the disclosure on Friday during an appearance on AIT’s Focus Nigeria, where he spoke on the party’s ongoing reconciliation efforts. He confirmed that Obi is among the key political figures the PDP is trying to bring back into its fold.

When asked directly if the PDP had contacted Obi, Gana replied, “Why not?” He added that Obi isn’t the only person the party is targeting for a possible return.

“We are also moving to other persons. But I don’t want to announce until we really get there,” he said.

According to Gana, the party is now more united and better positioned to welcome back its former members.

“I have a very solid platform. I can now go back to these people and say the platform you were complaining about is now set, proper, and ready to move. I know many of them would respond,” he said.

Obi resigned from the PDP on May 25, 2022, just days before the party’s presidential primaries, and went on to become the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general election. At the time, he cited “recent developments within our party that make it practically impossible to continue participating and making constructive contributions” as the reason for his exit.

The PDP’s renewed effort to woo Obi comes as the party embarks on internal restructuring in a bid to consolidate its strength ahead of the 2027 elections.
