It was an emotional day on Saturday as the remains of late Arise Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie,” were laid to rest in her hometown, Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State
The funeral Mass, held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Agulu, drew family, friends, colleagues, and dignitaries from across the state and beyond, who gathered to bid farewell to the young journalist whose promising life was cut short.
Her interment took place around 1:30 p.m., amid tears and tributes.
Among those in attendance was former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who joined mourners to pay his final respects.
Delivering his homily, Reverend Father Peter Ezewuzie of St. Theresa’s Parish urged the family to take solace in Sommie’s legacy and faith in God’s plan.
“The Lord who created us knows the beginning from the end,” he said. “Some may feel her life was cut short, but only God knows why. He loves her more than you do. The only thing you owe her is your prayers. She is in a better place today. The maturity of life is not in its length but in its quality, and our sister lived a quality life. Let us all strive to live well, because no one knows when their time will come.”
Speaking afterward, Peter Obi described Sommie’s death as a painful loss, saying it was one that only God could explain.
“We cannot question God,” he said. “When I heard of her passing, I didn’t even know she was from Agulu. Our coming here is to console the family, but this is indeed a huge loss. Before I left Birmingham yesterday, I told some people I was rushing home for the burial of one of my daughters. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.”
On behalf of the bereaved family, Sommie’s uncle, Mr. Obi Maduagwu, expressed gratitude to Arise News for their unwavering support since the tragedy.
“We thank the management of Arise News. They have been with us from the beginning,” he said. “We also appreciate everyone who traveled from far and near to be with us today.”
Somtochukwu Maduagwu tragically lost her life in September 2025 during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Abuja.
