  • “If You Think Nnamdi Kanu’s Sentence Is Harsh, You Have No Idea What We Have Suffered” — Southeast Victim Speaks Out

  • A grieving Southeast resident has expressed deep anger and frustration following the life imprisonment sentence handed down to Nnamdi Kanu yesterday. While some Nigerians took to social media to describe the judgment as “harsh,” the writer argues that anyone who says so lacks understanding of the pain, death, and destruction that the region has endured for years.

According to her, the violence unleashed by IPOB and its armed supporters tore families apart, destroyed livelihoods, crippled education, and turned once–peaceful communities into zones of fear.

“My Family Is a Victim. I Am a Victim.”

In her heartbreaking account, she recalls the tragic events that changed her family forever:

Her younger brother was murdered in Abatete in 2022.

His last moments were recorded on video and circulated online.

Their mother developed severe high blood pressure due to the trauma and spent almost a year in the hospital before passing away.

She insists that her family’s story is only one among thousands:

“So many families in Anambra and across the Southeast have tasted this same pain. People have lost brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers… all because of the madness carried out in the name of a cause that only destroyed those it claimed to protect.”

Shops Forced to Close, Lives Ruined

She also condemned the violent enforcement of Monday sit-at-home orders—actions that crippled businesses and pushed families deeper into poverty. Many traders who opened their shops in desperation to feed their children were attacked, beaten, or killed.

Meanwhile, she points out, Nnamdi Kanu’s own family lived comfortably abroad while residents at home suffered the consequences of his directives.

“My Son Couldn’t Go to Class—Even in Boarding School

The shutdown did not only affect business owners. It disrupted education across the region. Even students in boarding schools were unable to attend classes on Mondays due to fear of attacks.

She eventually had to withdraw her son because he and other students were falling behind academically compared to children in other parts of the country.

“If You Think This Judgment Is Harsh, Stay Far Away From Me”

The writer expresses disbelief that some people are defending Nnamdi Kanu’s sentencing. To her, such people lack empathy and have no understanding of:

    grief

    trauma

    loss

what violence truly does to a family

She emphasizes that this is not politics or online arguments—this is lived experience.

Life Imprisonment Is Soft Compared to What We Went Through

For her, justice has finally begun to take shape.

    > “People have died. Economies have collapsed. Children have suffered. Families have been shattered. How can anyone call life imprisonment harsh after all this?”

She concludes with a strong warning:

“If you think the judgment is harsh, may you and your loved ones live the experiences of loss and heartache that so many families have lived because of IPOB boys. Maybe then you’d understand.”
