  • Peter Obi Reacts to Nnamdi Kanu’s Conviction — Calls for Dialogue, Peace and National Reconciliation

  • Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to the conviction of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing the development as “unfortunate” and warning that it may worsen Nigeria’s already fragile state.

In a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: At a Time Like This”, Obi urged Nigerians and the government to reflect deeply on the implications of the judgment, noting that the country is already grappling with severe economic hardship, insecurity, and the consequences of poor governance.

According to him, instead of reducing tension, Kanu’s conviction may further escalate it.
He reiterated his long-standing position that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should never have been arrested, insisting that the arrest, detention, and now conviction reflect a failure of leadership and a misinterpretation of the issues surrounding his agitation.

Obi emphasized that the grievances Kanu raised were not impossible to address, stressing that dialogue, constructive engagement, and inclusive governance remain the most effective pathways to lasting peace. He criticized the government for resorting to coercion without exhausting the option of reason, empathy, and engagement.

He noted that in functioning societies, political grievances are addressed through reforms, negotiations, and political solutions—not punitive actions capable of deepening mistrust.

    > “The handling of Kanu’s case mirrors the government as a man trapped in a hole who, instead of looking for a way out, keeps digging deeper,” he said, stressing that the approach has worsened national tension at a time citizens are already overwhelmed.

Obi urged leaders to choose healing over hostility, reconciliation over retaliation, and dialogue over division if Nigeria truly desires unity and progress.

He called on the Presidency, the Council of State, and respected national figures to intervene and pursue a lasting solution anchored on peace, fairness, and justice.

Regardless of individual opinions about the court’s decision, Obi encouraged Nigerians to remain optimistic, expressing hope that peace and reconciliation will be achieved in the end.
