A tragic story of betrayal, greed, and heartbreak has shocked Nigerians after details emerged of how a young woman, Thecla, was gruesomely murdered by a close family friend she had helped.
According to a detailed narration shared by activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), the victim, Thecla, was a hardworking businesswoman from Imo State who ran a successful phone and accessories shop in Lagos. She lived with her family in Sangotedo, after moving them from Ajegunle, where they had previously lived.
Her younger brother, Justus, an Imo State University graduate (class of 2022), had a childhood friend named Ediri, whom he reconnected with after school. When Justus found out that Ediri was struggling financially, he convinced his sister, Thecla, to allow him to stay with them and assist at her shop. Despite her initial reluctance, Thecla eventually agreed after their father intervened.
Not long after, Justus secured employment with International Breweries in Ogun State and moved there, leaving Ediri to continue helping Thecla. To return the favor, Justus later arranged a job interview for Ediri at his company and even offered him accommodation while he prepared for the opportunity.
However, things took a dark turn.
In early 2023, Thecla suddenly went missing. When family members couldn’t reach her, they contacted Ediri, who claimed that she had travelled with one of her sisters to visit their mother in Ajegunle. His story later turned out to be false.
Suspicious, Justus travelled from Ogun to Lagos to file a missing person report. During investigations, neighbours revealed that Thecla had previously complained about Ediri stealing her money, amounting to about ₦900,000, but she had chosen not to arrest him.
Further police investigation uncovered horrifying details — Ediri had used Thecla’s stolen money to rent a new apartment, where police later found her phone. It was then discovered that Ediri had been impersonating Thecla, using her identity to transfer funds into his own account.
When interrogated, Ediri initially confessed that he pushed Thecla during an argument, causing her death, but police later uncovered that he had dismembered her body and disposed of it in a bush.
The tragedy deepened when the news of Thecla’s death led to the sudden death of their mother from shock, as well as the loss of their eldest sister, who had been battling cancer.
Reports indicate that Ediri has been in custody and was quietly charged to court without the family’s knowledge. His next court hearing is set for November 12, and the family is now working to ensure justice is served and he does not escape punishment.
This heartbreaking case serves as a chilling reminder:
> Be cautious of who you open your home and heart to — sometimes, the greatest threat comes from those we trust the most.
