Tension gripped Jabo community in Sokoto State on Saturday after residents discovered a suspected undetonated explosive device, leading to the swift intervention of security agencies.
According to an Arise News correspondent who was at the scene, the device was first sighted by a local farmer in the afternoon. Upon discovering the strange object, he alerted other villagers, who quickly gathered around the area and reportedly began efforts to dig it out.
The situation reportedly took a dangerous turn when the villagers, unable to remove the object manually, decided to tie a rope around it and attempted to pull it out using a camel. Security observers at the scene noted that the move could have triggered a deadly explosion.
“This was clearly a calamity averted, because if that device had gone off, it wouldn’t have been a funny scenario,” the reporter stated.
Security operatives, including police personnel and an ordnance disposal unit, later arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. Residents were urged to move back as specialists worked to assess the device and ensure safety.
Authorities are also reportedly considering the possibility that more unexploded devices may be present in the area. Residents are now being sensitised to immediately report any suspicious objects and avoid tampering with them, as investigations and safety operations continue in the community.
