A disturbing case of alleged police brutality has emerged from Imo State, where officers of the notorious Anti-Kidnapping Unit, popularly known as Tiger Base, have been accused of torturing and k!lling a 32-year-old trader, Japheth Njoku, in cold blood.
A Normal Day That Turned Deadly
On April 20, 2025, Japheth Njoku — a well-known trader at Alaba International Market, Owerri — was carrying out his daily business when he was suddenly arrested by operatives of Tiger Base.
His arrest followed an allegation by a fellow trader, Oluchi Obiagwu, who accused Japheth of stealing ₦15 million. Despite being fully aware of the unit’s violent reputation, Oluchi allegedly invited the officers to intervene in what should have been a civil matter.
No Investigation, Just Torture
Japheth vehemently denied the accusation.
Instead of beginning a proper investigation or charging him to court, Tiger Base officers allegedly subjected him to severe torture.
Sadly, during the torture sessions, Japheth reportedly lost his life.
A Shocking Cover-Up Attempt
Even after his death, officers allegedly continued deceiving his family by claiming he was alive and accepting food brought to him at the station.
His body was later secretly transported to the University Teaching Hospital morgue — without any notification to his family.
Autopsy Ordered, but Still Delayed
In June 2025, a court ordered an autopsy to reveal the true cause of death.
Shockingly, months later — by November — the process is still being stalled, raising suspicions of a deliberate cover-up.
A Family’s Cry for Justice
The family of Japheth Njoku has been plunged into deep pain and confusion. They are demanding:
- A thorough and transparent investigation
- Prosecution of the officers involved
- Accountability from Tiger Base leadership
- Immediate release of the autopsy results
Human rights advocates are also calling on authorities at both state and national levels to take decisive action.
A Pattern of Abuse?
Tiger Base has long been associated with allegations of extrajudicial killings, torture, extortion, and enforced disappearances.
This case has reignited public outcry over the unit’s operations and its unchecked brutality.
The family continues to insist: “We want justice.”
