The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly carried out multiple precision airstrikes on fleeing members of the foiled military coup in the Benin Republic.
According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the coordinated strikes targeted coup plotters attempting to escape Cotonou in armoured vehicles shortly after loyalist troops regained control from mutineers loyal to Lt. Pascal Tigri.
The airstrikes, conducted within a 30-minute window, involved several NAF fighter jets operating with the full consent of Beninese authorities.
Zagazola, citing credible military sources, said:
“The operation was meticulously planned and executed. Our objectives were clear: neutralize fleeing hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners.”
He added that every phase of the mission adhered strictly to international operational protocols, with deliberate efforts made to minimise civilian casualties while ensuring maximum impact on the fleeing insurgent elements.
Residents across parts of Cotonou reported hearing heavy explosions and seeing thick plumes of smoke rising from targeted locations.
Security officials confirmed that the airstrikes successfully disabled several armoured vehicles and blocked escape corridors used by the plotters, resulting in the deaths of multiple insurgents.
The intervention follows the failed coup attempt led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who briefly announced the dissolution of state institutions before loyalist forces overpowered the mutineers. After the collapse of the takeover, key members of the coup faction attempted to flee southward, prompting Nigeria’s swift aerial response.
A top military officer, reacting to the development, said:
“The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to safeguarding regional security and protecting the sovereignty of neighbouring states. Our operations are intelligence-driven, precise, and aimed at preventing any spillover that could threaten our borders.”
The strike marks one of Nigeria’s most decisive military operations outside its borders in recent West African history, signalling Abuja’s readiness to counter destabilising threats before they escalate.
