At least five Nigerian soldiers and a police inspector were killed on Monday following an ambush by suspected terrorists, locally referred to as bandits, in Zamfara State.
Among the victims was Inspector Aliyu Ibrahim of the 1 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Kaduna, who was attached to Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFYM) in Gusau. According to a press statement from the 1 PMF Kaduna, the officers were on pass and travelling from Bingi Kwatarkwashi in Kwatarkwashi Local Government Area to Gusau when the attack occurred.
The statement said the security personnel were ambushed at Gidan Goni village along the Kwatarkwashi route. Inspector Ibrahim and five soldiers were reportedly shot dead during the attack, while several other personnel sustained injuries.
The injured officers and the bodies of the deceased were rushed to Yeriman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, where the wounded are receiving medical attention and the corpses were deposited at the hospital morgue.
It was further disclosed that arrangements are being made to convey the body of the slain police inspector to Kaduna for a befitting burial, in coordination with the police component of Operation Fansan Yamma in Gusau.
Authorities have urged residents of the area to remain calm as investigations continue, assuring that more details will be made available in due course.
The incident adds to the growing security concerns in the North-West region. In a related development reported days earlier, at least seven people were killed and three others abducted during a bandits’ attack on Kyara village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The community, located near the Niger Republic border, was reportedly attacked in the early hours of the morning by heavily armed assailants.
Sources said the attackers fired sporadically, killing seven residents, injuring two others and rustling an unspecified number of livestock before fleeing. On the same day, a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in neighbouring Zamfara State reportedly left five people seriously injured.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official update on the latest attacks.
