A devastating fire outbreak has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman following an incident at a residential building on Bola Street, Oyingbo, Lagos.
According to a preliminary report by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire reportedly started in one of the rooms within the building before rapidly spreading to eight other rooms. The inferno also extended to six nearby shops, destroying goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Residents were said to have raised alarm as the flames intensified, prompting an emergency response. Despite efforts to rescue occupants, the elderly woman was unable to escape and was later confirmed dead at the scene.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, emergency responders—including the LASEMA Rescue Team from Onipanu, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, officers of the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant stakeholders—swiftly arrived at the scene and successfully contained the fire, preventing further damage to adjoining buildings.
Authorities have since commenced investigations into the incident, while affected residents and shop owners have been left counting their losses.
