  • Nigerian Man Charged With First-Degree Murder in Killing of University of Toronto Student

  • Canadian authorities have arrested and charged a Nigerian man in connection with the fatal shooting of a University of Toronto student near the school’s Scarborough campus.

Police confirmed that the victim, 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi, a third-year student from India, was discovered with life-threatening injuries along the Highland Creek Trail on December 23. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following distress calls, but Avasthi was pronounced dead shortly after officers arrived.

At a news briefing held on January 7, investigators announced the arrest of 28-year-old Babatunde Afuwape, who has been charged with first-degree murder. Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe described the incident as “deeply tragic,” noting that the young student had a promising future ahead of him.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect and the victim did not know each other prior to the incident. Authorities believe the killing was planned and deliberate, although the motive behind the attack has not yet been established.

The incident sparked fear and concern within the university community and among residents who frequently use the trail. Police have since reassured the public that the suspect is now in custody and that there is no ongoing threat.

Investigators are appealing to members of the public who were in the Highland Creek Trail area or around the Scarborough campus on the day of the incident, particularly anyone who may have had contact with the accused, to come forward with information that could aid the investigation.
