A legal practitioner, Abasiesebanga Ikoiwak, has been arraigned before a High Court in Akwa Ibom State over the alleged killing of her husband, Barrister Godwin Ikoiwak, following the discovery of a long-concealed family secret.
According to the prosecution, the incident stemmed from revelations surrounding a young man who had lived with the couple for years as their houseboy. The deceased reportedly believed the boy was his wife’s younger brother until he began to observe inconsistencies that raised suspicions about the boy’s true identity. Investigations later revealed that the houseboy was allegedly the biological son of the accused.
Prosecutors told the court that Barrister Ikoiwak had confided in close associates about increasing marital tensions and concerns regarding his wife’s past. A key witness testified that the deceased had disclosed that his wife previously worked as a house help and became pregnant under controversial circumstances—details she allegedly kept hidden throughout their marriage.
The court further heard that the late barrister intended to formally address the matter by involving family elders, but he was killed before any such meeting could take place. His death reportedly triggered a police investigation that led to the arrest of the accused alongside other suspects.
During the proceedings, investigators tendered statements and audio evidence said to link the defendant to the alleged crime. The prosecution argued that the killing was premeditated and carried out to prevent the disclosure of the secret.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. The court subsequently ordered that she be remanded in custody pending the continuation of trial and adjourned the case to a later date for further hearing.
