The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three individuals following the circulation of a viral video that allegedly shows the improper use of a ₦500 note.
In a statement confirming the development, the anti-graft agency said the suspects have been taken into custody and are currently undergoing investigation. The commission noted that the arrests were made after the video, which sparked widespread reactions on social media, came to its attention.
The EFCC reiterated that the defacing, mutilation, or misuse of the Nigerian currency is a criminal offence under existing laws. It stressed that acts such as spraying, stamping on, tearing, or otherwise mishandling naira notes are punishable by law.
According to the agency, the suspects will be formally charged in court once investigations are concluded, as it continues efforts to enforce laws protecting the integrity of the nation’s currency.
The commission also urged members of the public to handle the naira responsibly and to refrain from acts capable of undermining its value or dignity.
