Kwara Cracks Down on Street Begging After Bandit Arrest in Igbaja

The Kwara State Government has ramped up its surveillance of street begging across the state following a shocking incident in Igbaja, Ifelodun Local Government Area, where security operatives arrested a suspected bandit who had been disguising himself as a beggar.

The development has raised serious concerns about the exploitation of street begging as a front for criminal activities, prompting the state government to take decisive action to protect public safety while ensuring that genuinely vulnerable persons receive appropriate support.

Speaking on the matter, the Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam, emphasized the government's commitment to balancing compassion with security. "While the state remains committed to supporting vulnerable persons through rehabilitation and empowerment programmes, we will not tolerate the use of street begging as a cover for criminal activities," she stated firmly.

The commissioner explained that the government has established robust mechanisms to cater to the needs of vulnerable individuals, including rehabilitation centers and empowerment initiatives designed to lift them out of poverty and restore their dignity. She stressed that these government-approved channels remain the safest and most effective way to assist those in need.

The arrest in Igbaja has sent shockwaves through communities across the state, with many residents expressing concern that criminals may have been operating under the guise of begging for some time. Security analysts suggest that the tactic allows suspects to move freely in public spaces, gather intelligence, and potentially plan attacks without raising immediate suspicion.

In response to the incident, authorities have intensified monitoring efforts in strategic locations throughout Kwara State, with particular attention to busy markets, motor parks, and residential areas where beggars commonly congregate. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to work closely with community leaders and vigilance groups to identify and report suspicious individuals.

Hajia Imam appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual behavior to security agencies immediately. She also urged citizens to channel their charitable giving through the state's approved support programs rather than giving directly to street beggars, noting that this approach ensures aid reaches those who genuinely need it while preventing exploitation by criminal elements.elements.
