Lagos Assembly Halts Planned Demolition in Makoko After Public Outcry

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of the planned demolition of houses and structures in the Makoko area of the state.

The directive was announced in a statement on Tuesday by the Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams.

The decision comes after sustained protests by residents, activists, and civil society groups who expressed concerns over the impact of the demolitions on the community. For days, protesters had called on the state government to stop the exercise, insisting that thousands of livelihoods were at risk.

Adams, speaking on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, said the suspension followed a meeting between lawmakers and representatives of the Makoko community.

According to him, the Assembly will collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies to thoroughly review the circumstances surrounding the demolition plans. He added that all stakeholders will be fully engaged as discussions progress.

“On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and honourable members of this House, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped,” Adams said.

The Assembly is expected to further deliberate on the matter as the state works toward resolving the concerns raised by affected residents.
