The controversy began after Opeyemi shared a video review of Pomelle, one of the brand’s fragrances, which he reportedly purchased for ₦160,000. In the review, he rated the perfume 5/10, describing the scent as sweet and pleasant but criticising the packaging quality. He specifically faulted the printing on the bottle, advising the brand to improve its production standards. While he stopped short of dismissing the fragrance entirely, the review quickly gained attention on social media.
Yhemo Lee, however, did not take the feedback lightly. In a series of Instagram Stories, he accused Opeyemi of being bitter and acting in bad faith. According to him, Opeyemi had been approached by his wife’s marketing team at the launch of the perfume for a paid review collaboration but allegedly quoted ₦6 million, a fee the brand did not proceed with.
Yhemo claimed that after the perfume began performing well in the market—selling out twice and recording over 1,000 bottles sold—Opeyemi went ahead to buy the product himself and post a review that he believes was intentionally damaging. He argued that if Opeyemi had genuine concerns about the product, he could have reached out privately rather than airing them publicly.
In his posts, Yhemo emphasised that Pomelle is currently the brand’s best-selling fragrance and insisted that the negative commentary was misleading. His response, however, went beyond business defence, as he also took personal shots at Opeyemi, using harsh language that further fueled the online backlash.
The incident has since divided social media users. Some have defended Opeyemi, stating that his review appeared honest and balanced, noting that he acknowledged the pleasant scent and even encouraged people who liked sweet fragrances to try it. Others believe Yhemo Lee was justified in defending his wife’s business, especially given the alleged failed promotional deal and the timing of the review.
As the debate continues, the situation has reignited conversations around influencer reviews, paid collaborations, and whether personal relationships should influence public criticism.
Was the review simply honest consumer feedback, or was there an underlying motive? Social media users remain sharply divided.
