The Lagos State Coroners’ Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to provide an update on the whereabouts of the body of 20-year-old journalist Pelumi Onifade.
Onifade, who worked with Gboah TV, was reportedly shot and arrested while covering the EndSARS protests on October 24, 2020.
According to reports presented before the court, the young journalist’s body was later deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue on November 3, 2020, where it was tagged as “Body 1385.” His family subsequently identified the remains at the facility.
However, the police later denied that Onifade was among those arrested during the protest on that day, maintaining that his body was discovered on the ground and later taken to the morgue.
The remains were subsequently transferred to LASUTH, where a post-mortem examination was said to have been conducted. Despite this, the body was not released to the family and the autopsy report has yet to be made public.
The circumstances surrounding Onifade’s death and the disappearance of his body have remained the subject of legal proceedings.
During the latest hearing on March 3, 2026, the coroner directed the leadership of LASUTH to provide clarity on the location of the journalist’s remains within two weeks.
The case was adjourned to March 24, 2026, for further proceedings as the court continues its inquiry into the unresolved circumstances surrounding Onifade’s death.
