Long before social media made criminals household names overnight, one man’s reputation alone was enough to send fear through entire communities in Lagos. That man was Abiodun Egunjobi, better known by the alias Godogodo.
Before becoming one of Nigeria's most wanted robbery suspects, Godogodo reportedly lived a relatively ordinary life. He worked as a scrap metal dealer around Katangua Market in Abule Egba, where traders and residents knew him as a familiar face. According to statements he later made after his arrest, his life took a different turn following a prison sentence. He claimed that after leaving prison, he gradually became involved in armed robbery.
Over the years, the Lagos State Police Command accused Godogodo of leading one of the most dangerous armed robbery gangs operating in southwestern Nigeria. His gang was linked to a series of high-profile crimes, including deadly bank robberies, attacks on bureau de change operators, highway robberies, and violent confrontations with security agencies that resulted in multiple deaths.
For years, he remained one of the country's most wanted suspects, with repeated efforts by security agencies to apprehend him proving unsuccessful. His ability to evade arrest contributed to the fear and notoriety that surrounded his name, leading many Nigerians to believe he was untouchable.
That perception changed in August 2013, when operatives of the Lagos State Police Command arrested him during an operation in Ibadan, Oyo State, after an extensive manhunt. Police also recovered several rifles and ammunition during the operation. His arrest dominated national headlines, marking the end of a criminal pursuit that had lasted for years.
Following his arrest, Godogodo gave a series of interviews while in police custody. In those interviews, he admitted involvement in several robbery operations and reflected on his criminal past, claiming he had become a changed person. While some of his statements generated widespread public interest, not every claim was independently verified.
More than a decade later, the story of Godogodo remains one of Nigeria's most memorable crime cases. His journey from a market trader to one of the country's most feared robbery suspects—and eventually to his arrest—continues to serve as a reminder that even those who appear beyond the reach of the law can ultimately be brought to justice.
