The Plateau State Police Command has arrested three suspects following the alleged mob killing of a 25-year-old University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as "Ibee," after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos, Plateau State.
According to reports, Mbaya, a Jos-based model who was working to resolve an outstanding academic issue at the University of Jos, attended a social gathering before deciding to spend the night at a friend's apartment because it was too late to return home.
It was gathered that the following morning, his friend claimed that an iPhone was missing and allegedly accused Mbaya of taking it, insisting he was the prime suspect because they were the only two people who slept in the room. Although Mbaya initially left the apartment, he reportedly returned after being asked to come back and explain himself.
Witnesses alleged that upon his return, he was confronted by his friend and several other youths who repeatedly assaulted him with sticks and other objects in an attempt to force a confession. The attack reportedly lasted for hours before he became unconscious. A nurse who later examined him was said to have confirmed that he had died.
Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Police Command disclosed that three suspects identified as Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear and Nensemka Fwanji have been arrested in connection with the alleged culpable homicide.
Police also revealed that one of the suspects was allegedly seen in a viral video striking the deceased with a large wooden plank. The command added that investigations are ongoing while efforts have been intensified to apprehend other suspects believed to have fled.
Reacting to the incident, former Acting President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Prince Miaphen, condemned the alleged killing, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable. He called for a thorough investigation and urged authorities to ensure everyone involved is brought to justice.
The police also reiterated their warning against jungle justice, stressing that individuals who take the law into their own hands will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
