A UK court has sentenced a Nigerian teenager and his accomplice to 28 years in prison each for the murder of 18-year-old Keanu Harker, following a violent attack reportedly sparked by comments exchanged on Snapchat.
The two defendants, whose identities are protected due to the age of one of the offenders at the time of the crime, were convicted after the court found they jointly carried out the fatal attack on Harker.
According to prosecutors, the dispute began on Snapchat before escalating into a deadly confrontation. The pair tracked down the victim and launched a violent assault that resulted in his death.
During the trial, the court heard that the attack was premeditated and carried out with extreme violence, leaving Harker with fatal injuries. Emergency responders were unable to save him.
The sentencing judge described the killing as a senseless act of violence triggered by a social media disagreement, noting the devastating impact on the victim's family and loved ones.
Both offenders were handed 28-year prison sentences before becoming eligible for parole, reflecting the seriousness of the offence.
Authorities also used the case to warn young people about the dangers of allowing online disputes to escalate into real-world violence, urging parents, schools, and communities to remain vigilant over conflicts that originate on social media platforms.
The case has once again highlighted growing concerns over youth violence linked to online interactions and the tragic consequences that can follow seemingly minor disputes.
