US takes custody of Abu Trica over romance sc.am

For years, Frederick Kumi, better known online as Abu Trica, built an image around luxury. His social media pages were filled with expensive cars, large homes and piles of cash, painting the picture of a young man enjoying the rewards of success.

Now, that image has given way to something very different.

The Ghanaian socialite and influencer was extradited to the United States on Thursday after a lengthy legal battle in Ghana, where his lawyers had challenged efforts to send him to America. Despite those attempts, the extradition eventually went ahead, and he left Ghana on a Delta Air Lines flight accompanied by FBI agents.

US prosecutors allege that Kumi was part of a sophisticated romance fr.aud network that targeted elderly Americans and stole more than $8 million from victims.

According to the allegations, members of the group relied on artificial intelligence to create convincing fake identities on dating platforms and social media. They would spend weeks or even months building trust and emotional relationships with victims before asking for money. The requests were often tied to supposed emergencies, medical expenses or investment opportunities. Once the money was sent, investigators say it was moved through several bank accounts to make it harder to trace.

Abu Trica was first arrested in Ghana late last year during a joint operation involving Ghanaian authorities and US law enforcement. His case remained tied up in court for months as his legal team fought the extradition, but those efforts ultimately failed.

He has now been taken to the United States, where he is expected to answer charges of conspiracy to commit wire fr.aud and money laundering. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Abu, who has previously denied the full extent of the allegations against him, will now have the opportunity to respond to the charges in a US court as the case moves forward.
