Nigerian lawyer, Rasheedat Adeshina, has opened up about the 14-year legal battle she endured with the University of Ilorin over the institution’s refusal to release her certificate, recounting the struggles, sacrifices and determination that eventually led to victory at the Supreme Court.
Adeshina’s experience began after she completed her studies at the University of Ilorin but was allegedly denied access to her academic certificate by the institution.
What started as a dispute over the release of her certificate eventually developed into a prolonged legal battle that lasted for 14 years, forcing the lawyer to navigate different stages of Nigeria’s judicial system.
Speaking with Ayoola Olasupo, Adeshina detailed the difficulties she encountered throughout the lengthy legal process, including the financial and emotional sacrifices required to sustain the case over the years.
Despite the setbacks and the passage of time, she remained determined to pursue the matter through the courts.
The case eventually reached the Supreme Court, where a ruling was delivered in her favour, bringing an end to the long-running dispute and marking a significant victory for Adeshina.
Reflecting on the experience, the lawyer described the journey as one that tested her patience, resilience and faith in the judicial process.
Her story highlights the challenges individuals can face when disputes with institutions become prolonged legal battles, particularly when such disputes affect access to important academic documents and future opportunities.
For Adeshina, the Supreme Court victory represented more than simply obtaining a certificate. It was the culmination of 14 years of persistence and a determination not to abandon a legal battle she believed was worth pursuing.
Her experience has also renewed conversations about students’ rights, institutional accountability, and the need for disputes between educational institutions and former students to be resolved promptly.
After more than a decade in court, Adeshina can now look back on the lengthy struggle as a battle that ultimately ended in victory.
