The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed confidence that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will defeat President Bola Tinubu in Lagos State in the 2027 presidential election by a wider margin than recorded in 2023.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, made the claim while speaking about the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Director said Obi’s victory over Tinubu in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election reflected the political situation in the state and was not accidental.
He further claimed that Obi would secure an even wider margin in 2027 if the election is conducted freely and fairly, without voter intimidation, inducement or other irregularities.
Also speaking, the NDC candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District, Ladipo Johnson, expressed a similar expectation, attributing the party’s confidence partly to what he described as the performance of the Tinubu administration.
Johnson also claimed that the party had strengthened its political structure through the alignment of different political groups ahead of the 2027 election.
In the 2023 presidential election, Obi narrowly defeated Tinubu in Lagos. Official results reported by the Independent National Electoral Commission showed Obi with 582,454 votes against Tinubu’s 572,606 votes.
The NDC’s latest comments come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with opposition parties seeking to consolidate their support bases across the country.
The 2027 election remains ahead, and the NDC’s claim about the eventual margin is a political prediction rather than an established result.
