A 53-year-old woman, identified as Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel in Lagos State.
Monday was reportedly arrested in the Meiran area of the state on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she allegedly dumped refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall.
Her action reportedly contravened environmental regulations aimed at preventing the blockage of drainage channels and reducing the risk of flooding across the state.
Following her arrest, she was arraigned before the appropriate authorities and subsequently sentenced to one month in prison.
The development comes amid renewed efforts by the Lagos State Government and environmental agencies to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and protect drainage infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season.
Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against dumping refuse in drains, stressing that blocked waterways can contribute to flooding and pose serious risks to communities.
The government has also continued to enforce environmental laws against residents and businesses found violating sanitation regulations across the state.
