The Lagos State Police Command has arrested six suspected members of a syndicate allegedly involved in the diversion of imported goods worth more than N20 billion over a period of 19 years.
The suspects were identified as Lateef Jamiu, Abubakar Amadu, Aliu Olanshile, Opeyemi Oyewale, Hassana Malami and Hassana Haruna.
They were arrested by operatives of the Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit following complaints from importers over the alleged disappearance and diversion of their consignments.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were allegedly part of a syndicate that had been operating for several years, targeting imported goods belonging to unsuspecting businesses.
The alleged activities are said to have resulted in the loss of consignments valued at more than N20 billion over the 19-year period.
The arrests followed efforts by the command to investigate complaints from affected importers and trace those allegedly responsible for the diversion of the goods.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other individuals who may be connected to the syndicate.
The suspects are expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
