The Federal Government has inaugurated ten state-of-the-art medical diagnostic centres and three specialized cancer treatment facilities distributed across ten states.
The landmark commissioning represents a major operational milestone under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aimed at reversing medical tourism, modernizing tertiary healthcare, and decentralizing access to life-saving diagnostic and oncology services.
Strategic Infrastructure Expansion
The newly commissioned infrastructure includes ten modern diagnostic centres equipped with advanced imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scanners, digital mammography, and fully automated clinical laboratories. In addition, three comprehensive cancer treatment centres have been fully equipped with modern linear accelerators and radiotherapy equipment to support early detection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Bauchi, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that the rollout marks a transformative era for Nigeria’s healthcare delivery framework.
"This marks the largest expansion of health infrastructure and equipment in Nigeria's history," Prof. Pate stated. "These facilities were specifically designed to provide Nigerians across regions with immediate access to modern diagnostic services and quality healthcare, while serving as critical hubs for medical training and advanced research."
Prof. Pate explained that following the flagship launch in Bauchi State, additional centers including a major facility in Ibadan, Oyo State are coming online immediately to join the eight diagnostic centers already completed and test-run across the geopolitical zones.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
Nationwide Reach: 10 diagnostic facilities and 3 comprehensive cancer care centres spanning 10 states.
Advanced Equipment: High-field MRI machines, multi-slice CT scanners, digital mammography units, linear accelerators, and automated lab systems.
Public-Private Framework: Facilitated through strategic partnerships involving the Federal Ministry of Health, state governments, and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).
Dual Mission: Delivering clinical diagnostic and oncology care while boosting capacity for local research and postgraduate medical training.
Bipartisan Praise and State Collaboration
The initiative has drawn praise across political lines, highlighting a shared commitment between the Federal Government and state administrations to prioritize public health above political affiliations.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, commended the Tinubu administration's statesmanlike approach in selecting host states based on regional need rather than partisan considerations.
"Coincidentally, Bauchi and Oyo states are governed by the opposition, yet they were prioritized for these critical health projects," Governor Mohammed noted. "That demonstrates the pedigree of Mr. President as a statesman. We do not oppose for the opposition's sake; when we see good work that directly benefits our people, we acknowledge and appreciate it."
Governor Mohammed added that the establishment of federal medical facilities and specialized health institutions in the region will significantly ease the burden on local health systems and improve patient outcomes. He affirmed that state governments would ensure seamless collaboration with federal teaching hospitals and management boards to maximize operational efficiency.
Tackling Medical Tourism and Cancer Burden
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of non-communicable disease mortality in West Africa, with thousands of Nigerians seeking treatment abroad annually due to limited local radiotherapy infrastructure. The inauguration of three dedicated cancer centres directly addresses this deficit, bringing international-standard oncology care closer to home.
Health sector analysts note that pairing diagnostic facilities with specialized oncology units ensures faster diagnostic turnarounds, enabling earlier stage detection a pivotal factor in improving cancer survival rates.
Federal health officials confirmed that the newly commissioned facilities are integrated into the national health insurance framework, ensuring that underserved populations can access essential diagnostic and therapeutic services without facing catastrophic out-of-pocket expenses.
