The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) branch, has declared an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the union, as well as outstanding staff entitlements.
The industrial action took effect at midnight on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management without a satisfactory resolution of the union’s demands.
In a statement dated October 29 and signed by the branch chairperson, Professor Olujimi Dada, and secretary, Dr Soji Arinola, the union said the decision was reached at an emergency congress held on Wednesday, October 28.
ASUU said the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, signed in December 2025, had been approved for implementation by the university’s Governing Council. However, the union alleged that the agreement had not been fully implemented, with the management and council reportedly citing inadequate funding.
Among the union’s key demands is the full implementation of the agreement, including the payment of consequential arrears dating back to January 2026. It is also demanding the settlement of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and promotion arrears accumulated between 2013 and 2025.
The union further raised concerns about the university’s governance structure, including the composition of the Staff Disciplinary Committee and the Committee of Provosts and Deans. It also called for greater transparency in the electronic voting system, improved office accommodation for staff and better infrastructure, particularly at the university’s ICT Unit.
According to ASUU, the decision to embark on the strike followed several attempts to resolve the dispute through engagements with the university management, Governing Council and Oyo State Government.
The union said the university management met its representatives on Tuesday, October 27, and reportedly informed them that efforts were being made to seek the intervention of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. However, the union maintained that the meeting did not produce a satisfactory response to its demands.
Following the strike declaration, ASUU directed its members to suspend all academic activities indefinitely. The suspension covers lectures, examinations, statutory meetings, laboratory work and other academic interactions with students.
The union said the industrial action would remain in force until the university management addressed its demands.
The development is expected to disrupt academic activities at LAUTECH as efforts to resolve the dispute continue.
