NDLEA Rearrests 83-Year-Old Grandmother Over Alleged Meth, Colorado Possession

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has rearrested an 83-year-old grandmother, Uloma Uchechi Sunday, over the alleged possession of methamphetamine and Colorado, less than a year after she was convicted of a drug-related offence.

According to the agency, Uloma was arrested on Wednesday, October 7, at her residence in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguama, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

NDLEA said operatives found the suspected drugs concealed around her waist and tied with a wrapper during the operation.

The agency explained that the latest arrest followed intelligence linking her to a drug joint allegedly used as a hideout by criminal elements accused of terrorising residents of the community.

NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said Uloma had previously been arrested on May 17, 2025, alongside her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, at the same residence.

During that operation, operatives reportedly recovered 50 grammes of methamphetamine, 522 grammes of skunk, 260 grammes of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grammes of tramadol.

Babafemi said the mother and daughter pleaded guilty to the charges and were each sentenced to 12 months in prison or an alternative fine of ₦200,000. Both reportedly paid the fines and regained their freedom.

However, the agency alleged that Uloma returned to the drug trade after her release and established a drug joint at the residence.

The NDLEA spokesperson described her alleged return to the trade as a continuation of criminal activity, claiming that the premises also accommodated individuals considered dangerous to the community.

NDLEA Arrests South African Woman With 32.74kg of Cannabis

In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives working with the Nigeria Customs Service at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, arrested a South African national, Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, over the alleged importation of 32.74 kilogrammes of cannabis.

The agency said the suspect was found with 30 parcels of Thai Loud, a potent variety of cannabis.

According to the NDLEA, she arrived in Nigeria from Thailand through Doha aboard a Qatar Airways flight.

The agency further alleged that the suspect admitted to previously trafficking drugs through other African countries before attempting to expand her operations to Port Harcourt.

The two cases form part of the NDLEA’s ongoing operations against drug trafficking and the distribution of illicit substances in Nigeria.
