IT was a black Sunday at Umuakuru, in Emekulu, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, when nine people died in a compound, after the burial of a 98-year old woman, Mrs Felicia Njoku. Report said the son of the deceased 98-year-old woman, Mr Paschal Njoku, died along with his wife, Juliana, while their five children, Ebere, Ifunanya, Chibu-eze, Jackline and Uchechi, also died in the incident. According to the report, Mrs Christiana Uba, a member of the bereaved family but married at Umualum Uratta, and another friend, Mrs Catharine Ahunonu, also died in the incident. The report added that their corpses were discovered when the owner of the canopies used for the burial ceremony of Mrs Njoku came to dismantle the canopies, only to force open the door, after several knocks at the door without any response. Nigerian Tribune gathered that there was no single survival among the people that passed the night in the compound, where the old woman was buried. When the Nigerian Tribune visited the bereaved family, the only survival of the family, who slept outside the compound after the burial, Mrs Margret Ikeri, said it was a calamity she had never seen in her life. Meanwhile, five dead bodies had been removed when the Nigerian Tribune visited the area, while four other bodies were waiting removal for autopsies.
