At least 282 people have been killed after a massive 7.5-magnitude
earthquake hit Afghanistan and nearby Pakistan on Monday afternoon.
Most of the casualties occurred in Pakistan. Disaster authorities there
have reported at least 220 deaths, mostly in northern and northwestern
regions. More than one thousand others were reported injured.
Afghan officials said more than 60 people were killed by the quake in Afghanistan and more than 200 wounded, including 12 students killed in a stampede in a girls’ school in Takhar province. The death toll is expected to climb further because communications were down in much of the Hindu Kush region where the quake centered.
The powerful quake also affected Indian capital New Delhi. Indian Prime
Minister Narendra Modi said on social media Monday that the country is
ready to offer assistance to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and he has asked
for an urgent assessment of the damage.
