  • Graphic Photos: Popular Tennis Player Killed by Hoodlums In Somolu

  • The death of a table tennis star, Azeez Ogunlade, has thrown the table tennis family in lagos state, shomolu and bariga into mourning.

    The 20 year old former national junior player and lagos state athlete was confirmed dead after a brief illness.

    He made his international debut at 2008 African Junior Championship in Alexander, Egypt and 2009, it was his heroic display that gave Nigeria the title at the 18th African Junior Table Tennis Championship, the Egypt Open.

    It was not clear what led to his dead but sources said he was actually in bariga for a table tennis friend's child naming and theree he met his brother's friends that demanded for money and of which he gave them and unfortunately one of them started making jest of him and that led to a verbal abuse and clash which made one of the guys to hit him with a ring and since then he has been on sickbay and during the illness he was seriously vomiting blood before he was finally confirmed dead.

    However, three people were confirmed dead and his death has really caused chaos and pandemonium in shomolu bariga, a densely populated area in lagos metropolitan.


    Veteran Nigerian table tennis player Funke Oshonaike has expressed shock following the untimely death of former national junior star,Azeez Ogunlade, reacting to the sad news, Germany-based Oshonaike lamented on her facebook page. "Can someone tell me this is not true! Just read that my table tennis brother is dead! I'm so very sad, sick,confused and very empty right now."

    A Nigerian national table tennis player and ogun state number one Lanre Aremu, said that Ogunlade's death came as a shock to everybody in the table tennis family and we are yet to get over his demise in ogun state. He added. " The country will surely miss this young player and I sympathize with his family and all table tennis family in Nigeria, Africa and the world that such a player could depart at a prime age."
