The only confirmed survivor of the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad has been identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin. Of the 242 people on board, he is the lone person to have made it out alive
Ramesh had been seated in seat 11A, near one of the aircraft’s emergency exits, when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, smashing into residential buildings near the airport.
According to Indian police and medical officials, he may have either jumped or been ejected from the emergency door before the plane exploded into flames. He survived with multiple injuries, including bruises and trauma to his chest, eyes, and foot, but remains in stable condition in a local hospital.
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me,” Ramesh reportedly told doctors. “I was scared. I stood up and ran.”
Witnesses say he was found disoriented near the crash site and was taken to safety by local responders. His family in the UK has since been contacted, and his cousin told the BBC that he had called to say only, “I’m fine.”
Ramesh had been traveling with his brother Ajay, who is still unaccounted for and presumed among the dead. Recovery teams continue to work through the wreckage, though hopes of finding any other survivors are fading.
Investigators from the UK, US, and India are examining what caused the crash, which has become one of the deadliest in Indian aviation history.
