A heartbreaking tribute shared on Facebook by Kelechi Ihunanya Amadi has left many mourning the sudden and shocking death of her university coursemate, legal colleague, and long-time friend, Emeka Chukwudifu.
According to her, the sad news came just days after they had both communicated about his PhD proposal. He had asked her to review the document, which she did and sent back to him through WhatsApp.
However, her message did not deliver immediately. She tried calling him, but he was offline. Hours later, the message finally delivered, and she received a short, unexpected reply:
“I have no data.”
The reply struck her as strange. If he had no data, how did the message suddenly deliver and how was he able to respond? More confusing was the fact that he said nothing about the corrected PhD proposal she had sent.
She attempted to reach him again that night, but his phone was switched off. By the next day—Monday—his number remained unreachable. She assumed it was a power or battery issue and decided to try again the following morning.
But on Tuesday, while preparing breakfast for her son, she received a call from a classmate, Sandra Obijuru-Tuzie, who informed her of a troubling message circulating in their class WhatsApp group—one suggesting that Emeka may have died.
Immediately, she began calling his number again. This time, it rang—yet no one picked up.
After reaching out to another colleague, who then contacted Emeka’s father, the devastating truth emerged:
**“It is true. Chukwudifu has died.
He slept on Sunday night and didn’t wake up.”**
The news shattered her.
Emeka was young, vibrant, academically driven, and full of plans for his future. His death added to what she describes as an already devastating year—first losing her LL.M supervisor, then her father, and now the only enduring male friendship she had built in her academic journey.
She described Emeka as:
Intellectually stimulating
Reliable and trustworthy
Emotionally supportive
A deep thinker with big dreams
A friend who knew her secrets and shared his with her
Even when they had disagreements, the bond was strong enough that they always reconnected within days.
She also recalled how, shortly before she permanently left Abakaliki, he was the only friend who came to help load her items into a truck. Before leaving that night, he gave her an envelope—a condolence token for her father’s death.
Yet now, she mourns him too.
Emeka had just secured his second lecturing job. He was pursuing his PhD in Law. He was preparing for marriage. Life was aligning for him.
Then, without warning, he was gone.
A Final Goodbye
In her tribute, Kelechi thanked him for 10 and a half years of unwavering friendship, describing it as irreplaceable and unforgettable.
“When you were here, I wished you well.
Now that you have left us, I still wish you well.
May your journey be smooth, and may your soul find eternal peace.”
Her emotional message has since touched the hearts of many who knew Emeka and those who did not, a reminder of how fragile life can be.
