A Nigerian man has taken to social media to share a deeply emotional account of how violence and criminal activities in the South East have devastated families, communities, and livelihoods in recent years.
According to him, his own family was thrown into tragedy when his cousin was murdered inside their home, forcing his over 90-year-old grandmother and her younger sister to spend the night in the same compound while the bodies of the victims — his cousin and another woman — lay outside.
He expressed strong anger toward those he believes enabled and glorified criminals under the guise of agitation, saying:
“You want me to clap for the person who baptised criminals in Igbo land as Ụmụ Ọma and made the South East a free-for-all for all kinds of criminals hiding under the name of Biafra?”
He went on to recount how a friend who fled insecurity in Sokoto and relocated to Anambra for safety ended up being killed by the same armed groups popularly referred to as unknown gunmen.
The writer highlighted several communities including Orlu, Orsu, Okigwe, Lilu, Iseke, Orsumoghu, Ihiala, and others in Imo and Anambra States, describing the widespread terror residents have endured since 2022.
He also admitted that although he once supported the idea of Biafra, his stance changed the moment the agitation shifted into armed violence:
“I supported Biafra until it got to the point of an armed movement. I knew it would be disastrous, and I said it then.”
He lamented the heavy toll the unrest has taken on the region’s economy, the lives lost, and the destruction of the future of many young people.
Concluding his statement, he emphasized that he feels no sympathy for the individual he holds responsible for empowering violent groups:
“Our economy in the South East has been badly damaged. All the young lives we lost in Igbo land — for what?
I have absolutely no sympathy for the man. He made his bed. Let him lie in it.”!
