Former Minister of Labour and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige, has been ordered to be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre after he was arraigned before the FCT High Court in Gwarimpa on allegations of contract fraud.
Ngige, who appeared before Justice Maryam Hassan, pleaded not guilty to charges bordering on the alleged improper award of contracts amounting to N2,261,722,535.84 during his time in office.
According to the court proceedings, the contracts in question were reportedly awarded to individuals said to be linked to the former minister. Following his plea, Justice Hassan ruled that he be kept in Kuje Prison pending the hearing of his bail application.
The court fixed Monday, December 14, for the determination of the bail request, after which further decisions on the case will be made.
This development has stirred significant public interest, given Ngige’s long-standing presence in Nigeria’s political space. Further updates on the court proceedings are expected in the coming days.
