A young Nigerian mother has taken to social media to seek help after losing her fiancé under devastating circumstances—just two weeks after giving birth.
According to her message, the deceased, who previously owned the phone number she used to reach out, allegedly used ₦3 million of his personal money and ₦6 million belonging to his company to gamble. When the bets failed, he faced the threat of arrest and prosecution from his employers.
Despite the couple’s attempt to repay part of the debt—using all she owned—he ultimately died by suicide, leaving her behind with their newborn baby.
Now widowed and struggling, she recounts being dismissed from her teaching job because her infant required constant care. With no income, mounting expenses, and house rent almost due, she is pleading for assistance to start a small business that will help her survive.
Below is her emotional appeal:
“My fiancé owned this line, but he passed away.
It happened this June, just two weeks after I gave birth.
He used his money—₦3 million—and ₦6 million belonging to his company to bet, and he lost everything.
The company threatened to jail him, and out of fear, he took his own life.
Before his death, we tried to pay part of the money. I brought out everything I had, and I was left empty.
I was teaching, but the salary wasn’t enough because of child expenses, and I was asked to stop because I was always distracted with my baby.
Please help me. Things aren’t easy at all here. I only need something small to start a business and pay bills. House rent is almost due.
I saw your number on my late fiancé’s contact list, so I decided to reach out.
I’ll be very grateful if you can help me.”
Her story reflects the growing crisis of gambling addiction, economic pressure, and mental health struggles among young Nigerians.
