Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has issued what he describes as his final public statement on an ongoing kidnapping case until the remaining victim is released.
According to Gwamnishu, the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million from the family of the abducted couple. While the family chose to negotiate, he clarified that he does not negotiate with kidnappers, but instead supports rescue efforts through technology in collaboration with the police, military, and local vigilante groups.
He revealed that the family eventually raised ₦20 million, which was sent to the kidnappers. However, the abductors insisted they would only release the woman, claiming she was pregnant. The family informed him that the kidnappers were adamant about freeing only her.
On Monday, Gwamnishu said he received a call from the family saying the kidnappers had again demanded ₦20 million, this time claiming it would secure the release of both victims. As part of his role, he explained that his team uses money-tracking strategies to obtain real-time locations to support military intervention — methods that have worked in previous operations.
However, after the ransom was delivered, only the woman was released, while the man remained in captivity. The individuals who transported the money allegedly reported that the kidnappers did not count the cash. Instead, they briefly checked the bag and declared that the money was “not complete,” then sent the family representatives away.
Following this, tensions erupted, and a blame game began. Gwamnishu said he addressed the situation at the DPO’s office in Auchi, explaining the strategies used in kidnap-tracking operations. He emphasized that while he informed the family about working with the ransom for tracking purposes, sensitive operational details cannot be disclosed to anyone beforehand.
He added that he has fully briefed the authorities who invited him to Edo State and who understand the strategies involved. He also firmly denied allegations that he stole any money.
“I did not steal any money as alleged. I am open to investigation, and I request that the findings be made public,” he stated.
Gwamnishu reiterated that he will not comment further publicly until the remaining victim is safely released.
