A 47-year-old Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Cyracus Onunkwo, from Osina in Ideato North LGA of Imo State, has been tragically kidnapped and murdered by a police corporal and members of his criminal gang.
According to investigations, the priest was attacked at Banana Junction in Amaifeke, Orlu LGA, around 8 p.m. while returning home from Lagos State for the burial arrangements of his late father.
The gang, led by a police corporal, allegedly blocked his vehicle and forcefully transferred him into theirs. When the priest pleaded with them and explained that he had just lost his father, the officer reportedly used a selotape to seal his mouth, nose, and eyes, making it impossible for him to breathe or speak. This cruel act ultimately resulted in his death.
Realizing he had died, the suspects stole his phone, wristwatch, and ATM card, abandoned his body in another community, and fled.
How They Were Caught
A police investigation was immediately launched. Four days later, tracking of the priest’s phone led to the arrest of Jude Madu, a 32-year-old police officer. Others arrested include:
- Izuchukwu Okafor (aka Small)
- Emmanuel Ezigbo – found with the priest’s wristwatch
- Cyril Onyema – the driver who transported the gang
Several other accomplices were also apprehended.
The remains of Rev. Fr. Onunkwo have since been laid to rest, while the suspects have been charged to court.
