  • TIGER BASE OWERRI: FAMILY CLAIMS 20-YEAR-OLD DIED IN NOTORIOUS DETENTION FACILITY
  •  Tiger Base in Owerri, a detention facility infamous for reports of bloodshed, torture, and extrajudicial killings, has once again come under scrutiny after the disappearance of a young man.

Mazi Chinyerem’s 20-year-old son has been missing since September 19, 2023. The young man, the son of a local borehole installer, was reportedly arrested in Owerri on suspicion of communicating with a suspect via phone.

Despite extensive searches by the family in local hospitals and police stations, there has been no trace of him. He was last seen alive during the arrest and is now presumed to have died from torture or starvation at Tiger Base, a facility often referred to by locals as a “slaughterhouse” due to its grim reputation.

Relatives report that Mazi Chinyerem has suffered a complete mental breakdown, overwhelmed by grief over the loss of his son.

Tiger Base has long been accused of human rights violations, with many families alleging that over 95% of detainees never return home and bodies are often never recovered.

This case has reignited concerns over detention practices in Owerri and calls for urgent government investigation into alleged abuses at Tiger Base.
