Heartbreak and mixed emotions have trailed the release of kidnapped ECWA Church members in Aiyetoro-Kiri, Kogi State, after a reported ₦16 million ransom was paid to their abductors. While some of the victims regained their freedom, three were unfortunately brought out lifeless.
According to community sources, one of the bodies could not even be taken to the morgue due to prolonged exposure in the forest, where it had already been severely affected by soldier ants. The kidnappers were said to have initially rejected ransom payments before later accepting the money after days of uncertainty.
A similar pattern reportedly occurred in a previous case involving a retired Major abducted in Odo-Ape, where ransom was only accepted after the victim had already died.
Some of the rescued victims are currently receiving medical treatment, with hopes that they will recover physically and emotionally from the horrifying ordeal. Reports indicate they were subjected to severe abuse, including beatings, torture, and starvation while in captivity.
Elderly victims were said to have suffered the most, with some unable to survive the harsh conditions.
Residents have expressed outrage and deep sorrow, calling on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts in tackling rising insecurity and ensuring that criminal elements are brought to justice.
More updates will follow as the situation develops.
