  • Meet Fr. William Omatu, Loses All Brothers in Lagos Market Fire

  • Fr. William Omatu has been identified as the only surviving sibling in a family devastated by the deadly Lagos market fire that claimed the lives of his three brothers. Despite official statements suggesting that no lives were lost in the incident, Fr. Omatu insists otherwise, saying the reality on the ground tells a far more painful story.

According to him, the bodies of his brothers were never recovered from the scene. What remained, he said, were ashes — which he personally collected after the fire. One of the victims, Collins, was reportedly preparing to travel to the United Kingdom, having already applied for a student visa and awaiting final approval to begin his studies this January.

Adding to the tragedy is the timing of the incident, which occurred on the 28th anniversary of their mother’s death, deepening the family’s grief.

Fr. William has also raised concerns about the true scale of the disaster, claiming that as many as 100 people may have lost their lives in the building affected by the fire, contrary to government claims that no fatalities were recorded.

The incident has continued to spark conversations online, with many Nigerians calling for transparency, accountability, and a proper investigation into the tragedy.

It remains a heartbreaking reminder of the human cost behind such disasters.
