  • Nigerian Nurse in Australia Loses Licence Over Sleeping on Duty
  •

A Nigerian nurse working in Australia, Chimzuruoke Okembunachi, has had her nursing registration cancelled following findings of professional misconduct related to repeated incidents during night shifts.

According to reports from Australian health regulatory authorities, Okembunachi was sanctioned after multiple complaints were lodged against her for sleeping while on duty during overnight shifts. Investigations revealed that the conduct occurred on several occasions, raising serious concerns about patient safety and professional responsibility.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), which oversees nursing practice in the country, reportedly found that her actions fell short of the expected standards of care required of registered health professionals. The board noted that nurses on night duty are expected to remain alert and capable of responding promptly to patient needs, emergencies, and clinical responsibilities.

Following a disciplinary hearing, the board ruled that her behaviour constituted professional misconduct and posed a potential risk to patients under her care. As a result, her registration was cancelled, effectively barring her from practising as a nurse in Australia unless she successfully reapplies in the future under strict conditions.

The case has sparked conversations online, particularly within the Nigerian diaspora, about workplace pressures faced by healthcare workers abroad, especially those assigned to demanding night shifts. However, health regulators emphasised that regardless of challenges, maintaining professional standards remains non-negotiable in patient care.

Authorities reiterated that disciplinary actions are taken to protect public safety and uphold the integrity of the nursing profession.
